As we welcome in 2009, there is still uncertainty. No one knows what the state of our economy will be 2, 3 or even 6 months from
now. There is plenty of reason for concern. However, there are some things that will not change.
As we continue to work with our clients we are being asked the same question from many: “What should we be doing to insulate ourselves during this tough
time?” The answer we have been giving: Stick to the 5 core competencies.
1. Cultivate and Steward: It is about more cultivation and stewardship than solicitation. It is easy and quick to ask for money. However, the end result will be much better if you
understand that cultivation and stewardship play a much larger role. Relationships lead to meaningful gifts, not solicitations.
2. A Culture of Individual Giving: More than 80% of money in the sector is from individuals. Remember that when you spend more than 80% of your time seeking support from corporations and foundations. Thoughtfully create a culture for major and planned gifts.
3. You Get the Results You Deserve: How much time have you focused on fundraising? Half of staff persons’ time does not equal a 100% result. A board that talks about fundraising but does not participate will not generate much revenue.
4. Be Specific: What is it exactly your organization does to meet the needs of those you serve? What is the impact? If I gave you $1 what is the result? Be specific and be transparent. Remember your organization has no needs, it is those you serve that have a need. Imagine the difference between “needing money for food” and “directly feeding the hungry”.
5. Lead and Execute: Be a leader in the community and addresses challenges head on. Managing problems and challenges is not a sign of leadership. Be at the forefront of issues rather than taking the easy road.
Take a minute and see if these are the core competencies that your organization adheres to…they make a big difference!
I assumed the position of Executive Director two months ago. I am having my first strategic meeting with my board and staff at the end of this month.
